MLB 2022 All-Star Weekend was a special time for several generations of stars and not just professional players. On Saturday, Nike partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to host a youth baseball camp at Dodgers Dreamfield in Los Angeles’ Ramona Park housing project in Boyle Heights.
More than 150 kids showed up for the event, which was part of Nike’s Community Camp program. Participants participated in a series of drills covering various baseball and softball skills and learned the importance of a healthy lifestyle. They also received lunch and a special edition t-shirt to commemorate the occasion.
“Having the opportunity to meet coaches and mentors about sport has really opened my eyes and led me to learn and enjoy sport in new ways,” said 14-year-old Kiana Anaya.
For Jesus Delgado, site manager of the Boys & Girls Club at Ramona Gardens, the event was a continuation of the work the Boys & Girls Club seeks to accomplish. He was grateful to do something around the time of the All-Star Game in Los Angeles.
“Sport not only helps young people physically, but also mentally and socially,” he said. “This camp is a perfect way for our kids to make friends, have fun, learn teamwork, learn to play fair and build self-esteem.
STAR ALIGNMENT: Giancarlo Stanton wins MLB All-Star Game MVP in his hometown of Los Angeles
The Ramona Gardens Dodgers Dreamfield was established in 2017 by the Dodgers Foundation to create opportunities for children to enjoy sports and wellness in the public housing community. It is one of more than 40 courses the Dodgers have sponsored throughout the city.
“Dodgers Dreamfields provides Los Angeles families with havens and points of pride,” Delgado said. “We are proud of our community and our involvement here at Ramona Gardens, and the Boys & Girls Club hopes that events like this will inspire children to have fun, dream big and hopefully one day give back to their community.”
Over the weekend, the Dodgers Foundation also invited members of the Boys & Girls Club to hang out at LA Live’s Play Ball Park, which was set up so fans could further engage with the Midsummer. Classic. Children were able to participate in more baseball-related activities and spend time with MLB mascots.
One of the highlights of the All-Star Game was New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton winning the MVP award. Stanton grew up in Los Angeles in the shadow of Dodger Stadium.
