Librarian wants school magazines for students

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – After a brief summer break, the WECT Community Classroom is back! Every Tuesday on WECT News at 6 a.m., a local teacher’s DonorsChoose project is featured on the news. DonorsChoose is an online charity that helps teachers raise funds for school supplies and projects.

Charity Worley is the librarian for Williams Township near Whiteville, but due to social distancing she is also teaching science and social studies in grade 4 this year.

Worley requests topical books and magazines through DonorsChoose.

“Students need to be aware of what’s going on in our world,” Worley says on the DonorsChoose website. “These news magazines will help my students become aware of what is going on around them and improve their reading skills. “

Worley needs around $ 700 to fully fund his project. His project expires on September 2, so time is running out for donations. But there is good news for this project. Donations to this project are now matched, thanks to support from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, so only $ 352 is needed to fully fund this project.

Worley believes school magazines will give his students who live in rural Columbus County a broader perspective of the world. She would rather like to share with the other classes.

“For example, grade 4 students learn about students from another country who have used skateboarding to help them adjust to the war around them,” Worley said. “I would like to be able to get a subscription for the 3rd year students to have the same opportunity.”

Once Worley’s project is fully funded, DonorsChoose will purchase the magazines and deliver them to the school.
