Lawton MacArthur Hosts Youth Basketball Camp | Sports

For years, Lawton’s three high schools banded together and held a youth basketball camp. Shortly after coaches and brothers Bruce and Kevin Harrington left town, that tradition quickly died away.

Marco Gagliardi felt that had to change, which is why MacArthur High School boys’ basketball coach helped organize a youth basketball camp this week, Monday through Wednesday, for young hoops. aged from kindergarten to grade 8.

There were almost 70 children at the camp during the 3 day period. The Lawton Family YMCA donated $ 2,500 as a sponsor of the camp with the money going to MacArthur High School basketball programs.

“The campers did a great job, the high school students did a great job as coaches,” said Gagliardi.

Part of the driving force behind the camp was Gagliardi’s desire to put the children of the Lawton area back on a level playing field with the youth of the larger subways. He said he is already planning more youth camps and leagues later this year and the next.

“Sport in Lawton in general is behind places like Oklahoma City and Tulsa. I think we are behind at the high school level and I think it starts at the youth level, “said Gagliardi. “We hope this will eventually spread to the middle and high school levels. But it’s a long time to come. I felt it was really successful and can’t wait to start over.
