SCARBOROUGH – Laragh Kavanaugh as the new Executive Director of Organization for Ketcha Outdoors.
Laragh brings over 20 years of leadership experience to the role of Executive Director, both as an outdoor educator and as a director of an international non-profit organization. Whether guiding youth wilderness expeditions for Outward Bound, leading international programs in India and Ghana, or running operations for the Maine-based Council on International Educational Exchange, the Laragh’s breadth of experience in nonprofit management and youth development will serve the Ketcha community well, a press release from the organization states.
“Ketcha Outdoors plays an important role in our community and nurtures caring, confident young people who respect the natural world,” Kavanaugh said. “I am committed to providing safe, high-quality programming, improving communication and building inclusive communities,” she added. “Growing up in Maine and since becoming a parent, I understand the positive impact of the natural world on young people and the importance of access to quality outdoor programs for Maine families and communities. .”
Since 1964, Ketcha Outdoors has provided children of all ages with deep connections to the land, a vibrant community and the confidence to create a sense of belonging in the world, according to the release. This year-round non-profit outdoor education organization is best known in the community as Camp Ketcha in Scarborough. Set on 107 acres of meadows, forests, streams and wetlands, the Scarborough location offers summer day camp, preschool and preschool programs, after-school care and other programs for nature-oriented youth. Equally important to its mission is the Portland Gear Hub, a non-profit bicycle and outdoor gear store in downtown Portland that increases equitable access to the outdoors through affordable gear and reliable and educational. The Gear Hub offers free bike-winning programming for youth and adults, teaches bike maintenance classes, and sells refurbished bikes, camping gear, and XC skis.
