DVIDS – News – Former Assistant Secretary of the Navy speaks at NUWC Keyport Executive Leadership Forum

Former Deputy Secretary of the Navy James “Hondo” Geurts spoke at the Executive Leadership Forum for the NUWC Keyport Division on April 25.

The deputy. Geurts served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition from December 5, 2017, to January 20, 2021.

During the presentation, he talked about what leaders should be looking for in their staff:
“The most successful people have three characteristics:
– The first being curiosity. Find out what you are doing and what others are doing. You need to understand what is needed for your organization and your team.
– The second is humility. Think of others before you think of yourself. Look for those who can improve the organization.
– The third is the audacity to act. Understand what your organization needs to do to accomplish its mission and act accordingly.

Geurts continued, “There are so many capabilities in your organization that you don’t recognize yourself. Be innovative. Listen to your people. Large organizations profit from their talent. Celebrate learning whether you succeed or not. Understand what is needed to achieve the goal.

Leaders who listened to the presentation asked questions and expressed their own thoughts on what it takes to build a successful organization.

“Leadership development is imperative for a successful organization,” said Angela Hocutt, Head of Corporate Operations at NUWC Keyport. “We truly appreciate that former Secretary Geurts took the time to share his knowledge and experience over so many decades of service.”

NUWC Keyport provides technical leadership, engineering expertise, and unique facility complexes that serve to ensure continued submarine warfare superiority for the United States. As one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport’s mission is focused on the development and application of advanced technical capabilities to test, evaluate, field and maintain underwater warfare systems and related defense assets. These advanced technical capabilities directly support all of the Navy’s submarine programs.
