Carole Russell obituary (1958 – 2021) – North Chelmsford, MA

North Chelmsford

Carole C. Russell, 62, a resident of North Chelmsford, MA, passed away peacefully at her home on December 5, after a three-year battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Beth Benoit, with whom she had shared her life for 35 years. She was born in Norwood, MA on December 14, 1958, and was the daughter of the late Robert and Joan (McCann) Russell.

Carole grew up in Franklin, MA. She attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, played the trumpet in the Minuteman Marching Band for a year, and was a proud sister to the Lambda Delta Phi sorority. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Computer Science and Mathematics. After graduation, she served on the school board for Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School in Franklin, MA.

Carole’s first job out of college was on the second shift at Hewlett Packard in Waltham, making medical devices. She was promoted to an engineer position working on heart monitors. Over the course of two decades, she became Vice President of Research and Development at Philips HealthCare.

After Philips, Carole discovered a passion for teaching by working as a substitute teacher. She enrolled at Lesley University, where she obtained her Masters in Special Education. She joined the faculty at Greater Lowell Technical High School, co-teaching inclusion courses in mathematics. She loved teaching at ‘the Tech’ where she was very proud of every student she helped take the MCAS in math to graduate from high school. She also organized a major project to bring individual education and 504 plans online, allowing teachers in Greater Lowell to quickly access information about their students’ learning arrangements.

Carole was a 30-year member of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Chelmsford, holding numerous leadership positions during those years including the Standing Committee, Human Resources Committee and Investment Committee. She was passionate about her faith and often engaged people without a faith community on why they should visit the first ward.

Carole has coached at Chelmsford Youth Baseball for many years. She loved the game and loved seeing the players improve and work as a team. She was also a longtime Red Sox fan. She attended Red Sox games at Fenway Park, Oakland, Toronto, Camden Yards and spring training at JetBlue Park.

Carole has served as a Badge of Merit Advisor, Deputy Director of Scouts and Eagle Scout Coach in Troop 75 in Chelmsford, helping many young men develop leadership and planning skills. She has harassed and cajoled many life scouts to complete her eagle demands.

She is survived by her wife Beth Benoit, her children Ethan Russell-Benoit of Philadelphia, PA and Bryce Russell-Benoit of Boston, MA. She is predeceased by her parents, Robert and Joan Russell, and her sisters Roberta Gustin, Joan (Trudy) Gordon and Linda Schotch.

A virtual memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 18 at 1 p.m. Please access the service on the Chelmsford First Parish Church website with this link:, where there will be a live broadcast stream.
